Josh Hawley is expanding his investigation into AI-powered surveillance cameras beyond Flock Safety, firing off letters to Motorola Solutions, Verkada and Axon Enterprise demanding answers on how they collect, retain and share license plate data on millions of Americans. Hawley, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, wants each company to explain how broadly customers can search vehicle data, how long license plate information is kept, how many confirmed cases of misuse have occurred since 2021, and what safeguards exist to prevent officers from conducting searches without legitimate justification. The move comes as Florida Gov. DeSantis ordered all license plate reader cameras removed from state roads and Texas Gov. Abbott directed state agencies to stop spending on Flock Safety cameras. Roughly 150,000 Flock cameras currently operate across every state except Alaska.
