Graduates and other new entrants to the world of work have had a rough few years. A cool labour market for everyone has been icy for the youngest, with hiring of junior workers lagging the more experienced across a wide range of countries.
The early-career hiring pullback has been especially pronounced in white-collar work – software and other tech roles foremost among them – leading observers to point to an obvious culprit: the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can perform much of the work typically done by juniors, but are less able to replace the accumulated knowledge and experience of seasoned professionals.

Security has been stepped up at the Vico Baths sea-swimming spot in south Dublin, which is closed for repairs, following “unacceptable behaviour” towards contractors on site.
Last March, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council closed access to the popular swimming site in the suburb of Dalkey, which has been frequented by celebrities including actor Matt Damon and singer Harry Styles, for a repair and upgrade project due to be completed at the start of June.
This involved repairs to concrete access steps, replacement of damaged railings and installation of new swim ladders.
However, the work has stalled and the council said it was no longer able to provide a finishing date.

European countries have agreed to boycott all Fifa competitions if Gianni Infantino pushes forward with his proposals to sell chunks of the World Cup to US-based private investment.
In an extraordinary development all 55 Uefa members resolved not to participate in future World Cups or other Fifa-run events, saying in a statement that they “unanimously and unequivocally reject” the proposals.
An emergency meeting that lasted just short of two hours ended with a united front despite earlier fears that smaller countries, attracted by the money on offer through Infantino’s scheme, would be swayed in favour.
