Employee: “Can I ask what this software does?”
IT: “It tracks activity on your computer.”
Me: “What kind of activity?”
IT: “Productivity metrics.”
Me: “Meaning?”
IT: “Keyboard activity, application usage, idle time, things like that.”
I looked at him.
Me: “Are you telling me the company is measuring how much I move my mouse?”
He laughed.
IT: “It’s more sophisticated than that.”
That didn’t make me feel better.
The software had been installed without anyone explaining it to us.

My elderly neighbor used to pay me $80 every other Saturday to drive her to the grocery store.
For almost three years.
Always the last Saturday of the month. Same supermarket. Usually the same 20-minute trip.
The strange part was that she barely ever bought anything.
A loaf of bread. Some fruit. Milk. Maybe a few frozen meals.
She could easily have had the groceries delivered.
I’d offer to carry the bags to her kitchen, but she’d always refuse. Then she’d hand me $80 and thank me like I’d done something extraordinary.
