Arizonaโ€™s Proposition 318 and Nebraskaโ€™s Fairness for Girls initiative both do the same basic thing: they write into law โ€” and in Nebraskaโ€™s case, into the state constitution itself โ€” that teams designated for women and girls stay reserved for biological sex. Nebraskaโ€™s measure made the ballot after organizers turned in a ๐ซ๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ,๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ฌ๐ข๐ ๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ, and the stateโ€™s Supreme Court unanimously threw out every legal challenge trying to keep it off the ballot. What makes this sting for Democrats isnโ€™t just Arizona and Nebraska. Itโ€™s that ๐‚๐จ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ๐š๐๐จ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐–๐š๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐จ๐ง โ€” two of the bluest states in the country โ€” are on the cusp of doing the exact same thing national Democrats refuse to even discuss. Lawmakers in both state capitols already k!lled similar bills before voters forced the question straight onto the ballot themselves. Thatโ€™s the real story here: the same party that just ๐ฐ๐จ๐ง ๐›๐š๐œ๐ค ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐‡๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐’๐ž๐ง๐š๐ญ๐ž canโ€™t win this argument with its own voters. Democratic legislators in Denver and Olympia buried this policy behind closed doors, so their own constituents went around them and put it directly to a vote. Arizona and Nebraskaโ€™s results are in. Colorado and Washington are still counting โ€” but if even one of those two deep-blue states joins them, itโ€™s the clearest signal yet that this fight isnโ€™t red versus blue anymore. Itโ€™s common sense versus everyone else, and in state after state, common sense keeps winning.
