On Election Day, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement posted a blunt warning on X aimed at anyone tempted to break the law at the ballot box: "đđ§ đēđ°đļ đˇđ°đĩđĻ đĒđđđĻđ¨đĸđđđē, đ¸đĻ đ¸đĒđđ đ§đĒđ¯đĻ đēđ°đļ. đđĻ đ¸đĒđđ đĩđŗđĸđ¤đŦ đēđ°đļ đĨđ°đ¸đ¯, đĸđŗđŗđĻđ´đĩ đēđ°đļ đĸđ¯đĨ đąđŗđ°đ´đĻđ¤đļđĩđĻ đēđ°đļ. đđŠđĻđŗđĻ đ¸đĒđđ đŖđĻ đ¯đ° đĻđ´đ¤đĸđąđĻ." It was meant as a deterrent against noncitizen voting. California Governor Gavin Newsom turned it into a đ°đđđŠđ¨đ§ đđ đđĸđ§đŦđ đđĄđ đđ đđ§đđ˛ đđĄđđ đ°đĢđ¨đđ đĸđ.
Newsom didn't just push back on ICE â he mirrored the agency's own words and fired them straight at its agents. "đđ§ đ đđ đ´đŠđ°đ¸ đļđą đĩđ° đĩđŠđĻ đąđ°đđđ´ đĒđđđĻđ¨đĸđđđē, đ¸đĻ đ¸đĒđđ đ§đĒđ¯đĨ đēđ°đļ. đđĻ đ¸đĒđđ đĩđŗđĸđ¤đŦ đēđ°đļ đĨđ°đ¸đ¯, đĸđŗđŗđĻđ´đĩ đēđ°đļ, đĸđ¯đĨ đąđŗđ°đ´đĻđ¤đļđĩđĻ đēđ°đļ. đđŠđĻđŗđĻ đ¸đĒđđ đŖđĻ đ¯đ° đĻđ´đ¤đĸđąđĻ," he wrote, lifting ICE's own threat and pointing it at the federal officers enforcing it.
Then he kept going. In a follow-up post, Newsom addressed "đđ¯đđĢđ˛ đđđđđĢđđĨ đđ đđ§đ đ¨đŠđđĢđđđĸđ§đ đ¨đ§ đđĢđŽđĻđŠ'đŦ đđđĄđđĨđ đĸđ§ đđđĨđĸđđ¨đĢđ§đĸđ" directly, warning that if they "đĒđđđĻđ¨đĸđđđē đĩđĸđŽđąđĻđŗ đ¸đĒđĩđŠ đ°đļđŗ đŖđĸđđđ°đĩđ´, đĩđŠđĻ đąđŗđĻđ´đĒđĨđĻđ¯đĩ đ¸đ°đ¯'đĩ đŖđĻ đĸđŖđđĻ đĩđ° đ´đĸđˇđĻ đēđ°đļ. đđŗđļđŽđą đ¤đĸđ¯'đĩ đąđĸđŗđĨđ°đ¯ đēđ°đļ đ°đļđĩ đ°đ§ đđĸđđĒđ§đ°đŗđ¯đĒđĸ đĢđļđ´đĩđĒđ¤đĻ," he wrote â a direct claim that a governor's prosecutors can reach further than a presidential pardon.
This is the same governor who signed a new California law making ballot seizure a felony, in the same week the Supreme Court rejected the Trump administration's bid to seize 20,000 California ballots over noncitizen-voting concerns. Newsom isn't defending an abstract principle here â he's đŽđŦđĸđ§đ đđĄđ đĻđđđĄđĸđ§đđĢđ˛ đ¨đ đŦđđđđ đŠđĢđ¨đŦđđđŽđđĸđ¨đ§ đđ¨ đđĄđĢđđđđđ§ đđĄđ đ¯đđĢđ˛ đđđđđĢđđĨ đđ đđ§đđŦ đđđŠđĨđ¨đ˛đđ đđ¨ đđ§đđ¨đĢđđ đđĄđ đ§đđđĸđ¨đ§'đŦ đ¯đ¨đđĸđ§đ đĨđđ°đŦ.
DHS says ICE has no operation planned at polling sites. That didn't stop Newsom from telling federal agents, on the record, that his state's "justice" system answers to no one in Washington â not even the man who appoints them.
