Across the country, schools continue to sweep serious concerns under the rug rather than address them head-on. Parents are often left fighting for answers while administrators protect policies and reputations.

The First Amendment does not disappear simply because someone takes offense. SLF is standing up for the First Amendment and supporting @defendinged and @xx_xyathletics challenges to Colorado laws that allow protected speech to be restricted based on subjective claims of offense. Free speech cannot depend on whether someone agrees with what is being said.

A Kentucky mom, Miranda Stovall, asked a simple question: What did my child’s public school plan to ask my child on a mental health survey?
Instead of transparency, she was told she could not see the student survey because of “copyright.”
She chose to opt her child out, but the school ignored this decision.
Now she’s taking that fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
This case could have nationwide implications for every parent who believes schools should never hide materials, surveys, or curriculum from the families they serve.
Parents are not outsiders.
Parents are not obstacles.
Parents have a right to know.

Public schools should never be allowed to secretly survey students on political beliefs, abortion, family values, or other deeply personal topics while hiding the contents from parents behind “copyright” claims.
That’s why SLF is taking this fight to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Transparency is something parents expect from schools when we drop our kids off for the day. If I can’t see what you’re asking my child, it shouldn’t be given to my child.
Today, SLF filed a cert petition to the Supreme Court of the United States in the case of Stovall v. Jefferson County Board of Education, asking the Court to stop the secret surveying of minor children in public schools and the ability of schools to hide behind “copyright law” when parents request to see copies.
Because parents should never be kept in the dark about what schools are asking their children behind closed doors.
