A little over two years into office and the asylum backlog is down, the number of asylum seekers in hotels is falling, illegal working arrests are at record levels, and deportations and returns are up markedly.
Small boats numbers are also now falling, but we are not complacent and there is more we must do. That is why I have boosted enforcement on the French beaches and overseas, and introduced new legislation to tackle the pull factors that draw people here through unsafe and illegal routes.
This government is restoring control at our border and fairness to the migration system.

A devastating incident in Teesside this morning in which seven people have died, including two police officers.
Cleveland police have my support as they work to identify all those involved.
Police officers put their own safety on the line to protect their communities every single day. The two officers were on active duty, serving the people of Cleveland.
My thoughts are with all those affected, their families, friends, the emergency services who attended the scene and the wider police family.

Returns have reached a near-decade high, with removals now at their highest level since 2016.

The truth is, it isn't.
Two years have passed since the unspeakable act of evil perpetrated in Southport.
Today my thoughts remain with the three beautiful young girls Bebe, Elsie and Alice, their families and friends, and all of the victims of this tragedy.

This @NCA_UK and Border Force seizure delivers another blow to the gangs facilitating dangerous Channel crossings. I am grateful to the officers and staff whose diligent work made this possible.
Had the boats and engines reached French beaches, they could have brought 2,000 illegal migrants to our shores.
Disruptions to smuggling activity including arrests, convictions and seizures are up by nearly 50% – part of this government’s plan to bear down on illegal crossings.
But we are not complacent, and there is much work still to be done.

I think everyone can see there was no ill intent behind this ribbing of the new Lord Chancellor - a role I once filled and which comes with immense challenges thanks to the vandalism inflicted on our justice system by the last Conservative government.
But I appreciate this is an extremely serious issue and do not want anyone to mistake this moment of levity for a lack of serious intent.

My thanks to @terrorismpolice for their swift work in apprehending a boy who allegedly planned to target two mosques in south London. It is deeply unsettling to see someone so young charged with offences of this nature.
I know how concerning this will be to the Muslim community just days after a foiled attack at an Islamic festival in Suffolk.
The police have confirmed there is no wider threat and they are not seeking other suspects in connection with this investigation. They have stepped up patrols in the affected areas, and they have my full support. Everyone in this country should be able to worship free from fear, intimidation or hatred.
