Two years have passed since the unspeakable act of evil perpetrated in Southport. Today my thoughts remain with the three beautiful young girls Bebe, Elsie and Alice, their families and friends, and all of the victims of this tragedy. We owe it to them to do everything in our power to prevent such a tragedy happening again.

My thoughts are with the five officers injured in the boat crash on the River Thames near Westminster Bridge. Thank you to @Ldn_Ambulance and @LondonFire for their swift response.

This @NCA_UK and Border Force seizure delivers another blow to the gangs facilitating dangerous Channel crossings. I am grateful to the officers and staff whose diligent work made this possible. Had the boats and engines reached French beaches, they could have brought 2,000 illegal migrants to our shores. Disruptions to smuggling activity including arrests, convictions and seizures are up by nearly 50% – part of this government’s plan to bear down on illegal crossings. But we are not complacent, and there is much work still to be done.

At least 25 inflatable boats and 25 outboard engines which would have been delivered to people smuggling gangs have been seized at Felixstowe, as part of a NCA investigation. Read the full story ➡️

I think everyone can see there was no ill intent behind this ribbing of the new Lord Chancellor - a role I once filled and which comes with immense challenges thanks to the vandalism inflicted on our justice system by the last Conservative government. But I appreciate this is an extremely serious issue and do not want anyone to mistake this moment of levity for a lack of serious intent.

It is an honour to remain as Home Secretary in @andyburnham’s Cabinet. I may be biased, but it's the best job in the business. We have begun the work of major reform, to make our streets safer and our immigration system fair for all. Now let’s finish the job.

My thanks to @terrorismpolice for their swift work in apprehending a boy who allegedly planned to target two mosques in south London. It is deeply unsettling to see someone so young charged with offences of this nature. I know how concerning this will be to the Muslim community just days after a foiled attack at an Islamic festival in Suffolk. The police have confirmed there is no wider threat and they are not seeking other suspects in connection with this investigation. They have stepped up patrols in the affected areas, and they have my full support. Everyone in this country should be able to worship free from fear, intimidation or hatred.

Today, MPs backed a Bill that makes our asylum system fairer: fairer for genuine refugees, and fairer for local communities This new Bill ensures protections are in place for genuine refugees, while tackling abuse of our asylum system, and lightening the burden on local communities. We are bearing down on uncontrolled, unsafe and illegal small boat crossings - and moving towards capped, safe and legal routes for genuine refugees.

Ann Widdecombe was fearless and forthright. She was a devoted public servant, the likes of whom we will rarely, if ever, see again. The circumstances of Ann's murder are extremely distressing. The investigation is now being led by @TerrorismPolice. The police have cautioned against speculating about the case. It is vital they are given the space they need to carry out their work. This raises questions about the security of those in public life. This Government, the House of Commons and the police will work together to protect those who choose to serve. Today is a dark day. But let us celebrate Ann's memory. “We get one go this side of eternity," she once said. She didn't waste a minute. May she now rest in eternal peace.

This weekend's Ijtima in Barham was due to be attended by over 10,000 Muslims. Instead, it ended early after a credible extreme right-wing terrorism-related threat to the lives of those present. Twelve individuals have now been arrested as part of an investigation led by Counter Terrorism Police.

.@TerrorismPolice are leading an investigation into a credible threat to those attending the UK Ijtima festival this weekend. I thank Suffolk Police, Counter Terrorism Policing, and the organisers for their swift and effective response that undoubtably saved lives. Twelve individuals have now been arrested. I know this is deeply concerning news for British Muslims. We must stand against hatred and we must unite around our shared belief in a country that is open, generous and tolerant to all our communities.

This morning I have spoken to the head of @TerrorismPolice. Following new information and evidence, they are now leading on the investigation into the horrific murder of Ann Widdecombe. The police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon. My thoughts today remain with Ann’s family and friends, and all those who loved her.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Ann Widdecombe. The circumstances of her death are extremely distressing and my thoughts are with Ann's family and loved ones. Ann's dedication to public service was decades long, and she was a true servant of her constituents. I have spoken to the Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall police today. The Home Office stands ready to provide whatever support they need with their ongoing investigation. I urge everyone to avoid speculation and allow the police investigation to progress.

The Police Bravery Awards are a day to celebrate acts of heroism that would otherwise go unheralded. A day to say what is too rarely said: thank you. From the dangers officers face to the sacrifices they and their families make, thank you for all you do to keep us safe.

Abuse of the asylum system is eroding people's support for providing asylum at all. I believe we must continue to protect those in need, now and for generations to come. But to do so, we must restore order to our borders.

The Southport Inquiry identified fundamental failings that resulted in the senseless killing of three young girls and violent attacks on others. We owe it to the victims to right these wrongs. Sir Adrian’s recommendations for central government have been accepted in full.

The cost of asylum accommodation on the British taxpayer is too high. Once people can contribute and repay the generosity of the British people, we expect them to do so.
