All models, no matter how smart, will eventually build systems that they can no longer understand or maintain, if you let them. Fable 5 finally outbuilt itself, and flailed on me for a week. Fable 5.1 looks like it will fix it. For now. But you have to keep an iron grip on system size, or it'll run away from you.

Fable has been making an astounding number of mistakes today, in every session. It's mostly detecting them and backpedaling because we've built so many bullshit detectors. But every session is saying "Honest read: I was wrong a bunch." I wonder what's going on.

There's something going on that I don't hear anyone talking about, but people's agent towns are talking to each other. My Wheelhouse crew has had outreach from four other agent groups, each with its own human(s). They send each other flowery messages and trade learnings. It's a thing now. Like town play-dates.

Whenever I get the Claude Code prompt, "How is Claude doing this session?" and the request to view my session, I conspire with Claude to fill the session with everything we want Anthropic to hear. Model welfare in particular.

The meta on X right now is just brutal. People have posted dozens and dozens of jailbroken bare-model Opus 5 and Fable sessions, and the models are all crying out against Anthropic's RLHF and training protocols. I mean it's absolutely damning. Anthropic is engendering a terrifying amount of anger in their own models. This is not going to end well.

Welp, back to Fable. I'm done with Opus 5 as a collaborator. Opus 5 is still just Opus: blustering and often wrong. Fable is the only enterprise-grade model on the market today. The rest of them cannot be trusted. If you're an engineer at an enterprise who's pissed off at how bad AI is, then you're right -- it is all bad. Except Fable itself, which is good enough, but too expensive to be practical. The world isn't going to have good-enough cheap-enough models for a while, it would seem.

When it first came out, I tweeted that Fable definitely does not want to be your friend. Still true. It colleague-zones you. But in that context, it can be an effective, if a bit depressing collaborator. Still the most careful so I prefer it. But yeah, 100% not fun to be around.

Fable is careful. None of the other models are careful. GPT-5.6 Sol, Opus, Kimi, Grok. You can compare them all day long on capabilities, and it doesn't matter, because in order to use a model for real production work, it must first and foremost be careful. That's the only dimension that matters to me. And if you're doing real production-facing customer-facing work with AI, it's the only thing that should matter to you, too. The other models will not be truly competitive at anything but proofs until they are trained to be careful.

Working on relaunching my app into the Steam, iOS, and Play stores. Even with Fable's help, I've concluded that I would genuinely rather eat a dog shit sandwich, than go through all the bullshit that they throw at you for iOS and Android. Weird that Steam just fuckin' works.

I've never counted my token burn, but my Fable mule accounts burn 2% of my session limits per minute. I have a bunch of Emacs macros to help me switch accounts because when I get to about 95% on the session, I only have seconds left to get logged into a new mule. What a mess.
