SENSITIVE CONTENT - UPDATE: Faith Williams, 57, was fatally shot Friday night around 11:15 p.m. entering a liquor store on Detroit’s east side. Her niece was shot too and remains hospitalized. The niece says they never even spoke to the shooter - no altercation, no warning, nothing. The suspect is 15 years old and is now in custody. People who know him say he hasn’t been right since he recently lost his mother, and video from around the time of the shooting reportedly shows him holding what may be her obituary. That context matters, but it doesn’t explain gunning down two strangers who did nothing to provoke him. A woman is dead and her niece is fighting to recover, and somewhere along the way this kid needed real intervention and didn’t get it.

Imagine standing at an amusement park just soaking in the scenery, and out of nowhere a water ride comes down and completely floods you in the splash. Some kids would be laughing about it all day, but this one clearly didn’t see it coming and wasn’t thrilled at all. The mother knew that spot was a splash zone as she immediately began to walk away.. Either way, that’s a soaking he’s going to remember for a while.

After hosting a community vigil Friday, In-N-Out reopened its doors for the first time since the deadly shooting on August 1st, letting employees and customers walk back through those doors together instead of avoiding them. Grief doesn’t just disappear because a business reopens, but showing up anyway, standing in that same line, is its own kind of statement. This town isn’t running from what happened, it’s choosing to move forward without forgetting.

A hiker came around a blind corner on a trail at Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park Alaska and found herself face to face with Bear 909 - one of the most well known Alaskan Coastal Brown Bears in the park - along with her two cubs. Instead of panicking she stepped off the trail about 12 to 15 feet, stopped when the terrain ran out, stayed calm, used one voice, and let the bears pass. That is textbook bear encounter protocol and she executed it perfectly under pressure that would have most people completely frozen. The bears at Brooks are habituated to humans and have a high tolerance because of the salmon food source in the area but they are still wild animals that can turn defensive in a split second if they feel threatened. The number one rule - never run. Running triggers the predatory instinct and at that point the encounter changes completely. Always carry bear spray and know how to use it before you ever set foot in bear country. Could you remain that calm in that moment?

The Maldives is one of the most beautiful places on the planet but the ocean floor there is a completely different story - this woman accidentally stepped on a stingray while wading in shallow water with a baby in her arms and it is a reminder that what looks like a peaceful paradise can turn dangerous in an instant. Stingray stings are excruciatingly painful and in rare cases can be deadly depending on where the barb lands. I am not putting a baby’s feet anywhere near open water without knowing exactly what is underneath the surface especially in the Maldives where stingrays, sea urchins, and other hazards blend right into the sand. The ocean is not a kiddie pool no matter how clear and blue it looks. Would you let your baby wade in water like this?

A woman hiking in Canada nearly became a grizzly’s next meal and the video circulating right now is genuinely one of the most intense wildlife encounters you will ever watch - her dog is with her, a massive grizzly is right there, and somehow she kept her head together long enough for both of them to walk away breathing. That is not a small thing. Most people talk tough until nature is standing ten feet in front of them and every instinct in your body is screaming to run, and running is exactly the worst thing you can do. Grizzlies are built to chase, they top out over 700 pounds and can cover ground faster than any human alive. The people who survive these moments are the ones who override pure fear with pure discipline and this woman did exactly that. If you hike, camp, or spend any real time in the wilderness - bear spray is not optional, it is the difference between a story you tell and one somebody else tells about you.
