Rut season is back and the bison are hot and bothered. From now until September, it’s mating season for bison. Bulls compete for mates and can become much more aggressive. When visiting public lands, give the bison plenty of space and admire them from a safe distance away.

Just looking back on Bison Month as it comes to a close. 🦬 Before the herd moves on, here are a few fun facts: 🌎Bison are the largest land mammals in North America. 🏃They can run up to 35 mph and jump as high as 6 feet. 💪A bison's hump is made of powerful muscles that help it plow through deep snow. 🚫Bison are not pets - enjoy from afar and respect their sacred space Thank you for joining us this month as we celebrated the enduring cultural and historical importance of bison to tribal nations and the story of America's national mammal. Until next year, we'll keep following the herd.

Native American tribes are the original fire service, using Indigenous knowledge to protect and safeguard the lands they have stewarded since before colonization. Today, that knowledge and leadership remain vital to the U.S. Wildland Fire Service mission, helping defend and restore tribal trust lands from danger across Indian Country. The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Division of Fire provides fire protection for Tribal, state, and private timbered lands within the reservation and answers the call across Indian Country. They provide critical resources like helitack crews, Type 6 engines, Type 2 Initial Attack crews, fire investigators, and incident management personnel in support of Tribal Nations, as well as federal, state, and local partners. Through strong partnerships with tribal fire programs, the U.S. Wildland Fire Service helps protect Tribal Trust lands while upholding the federal trust responsibility to Tribes. Together, we're building a stronger, more resilient wildland fire community. Videos by Michael Umphrey/CSKT
