Moderna is a great example of what happens when people are bold enough to ignore the haters and invest in technology platforms.
In 2019 this company was widely assumed to die. But in COVID they likely saved several tens of millions of lives, bought themselves a financial lifeline to go after cancer, and now they’re going to save many million more.

neat thing about this is all the protein design tools claude used are open source.
this checks out with what id expect: as OSS protein design tools get really good (eg ESMFold2 which this used), we're going to have the intelligence to design binders increasingly democratized bc tools like claude are smart enough to use them (and probably better than humans can use them / to more depth).
now that this now kind of just works, will be very interesting to see whether claude eventually has bio skills beyond domains where there are modality-specific models it can call in the open source

Completely nuts that PBM revenue is comparable to pharma revenue in the status quo.
Pharma companies take on enormous scientific and execution risk to discover and advance medicines. PBMs are unnecessary middlemen that do neither of those things.

common misperception. west coast liberals and east coast liberals are extremely different, especially on taxes.
In Massachusetts I pay about 1/2 the state tax rate and about 1/3 the property tax rate I would in CA.
Cambridge just upzoned the entire city, so more homes can be built legally in Cambridge than the rest of MA and tbh i would bet all of California. It has the same zoning as Paris now. also there are very few homeless people and many homeless shelters, though could ofc be even better.
The public schools are the best in the country.

ah yes surely the 100s of YC founders past Series A every year will prepare to just take a several hundred million dollar loan from the government they have to pay off in 10 years instead of just moving outside CA?

very excited about this line of work. it's exactly the type of work that AI tools are really good at, and matches a burning problem in the market
in china, there are ~10 frontier AI labs, about half of them the offshoot of a money printer (Tencent, Bytedence, Alibaba, etc) and the other half of them new startups.
America has the startups, but has very few money-printer-attached labs. It's really just Meta, Google, and sort of nvidia.
why is an IBM or Cisco or Netflix or amazon frontier AI lab not a thing (w/ actually shipped products not just a research team).
