I just renewed one of my oldest domains. One I will never make a single cent from. đ
Let me tell you why.
About 10 years ago in Denmark, a now-dissolved law firm called "Opus Advokatfirma" started mass-mailing letters to Danish citizens whose IP addresses had allegedly been used to download music and movies via torrents.
The lawyer behind it, Niels Dahl-Nielsen â officially employed at a different law firm, but also director of Opus, which mostly seemed to exist to take the bad PR from these letters â argued publicly for reversed burden of proof:
"You just need to prove you didn't download anything."
The problem is, it's almost impossible to prove a negative. How would I prove I did NOT speed on the highway last Tuesday?
They knew that too â and sent the letters out anyway, demanding compensation from thousands of people, hoping enough would pay out of fear rather than fight it.
It worked, in the sense that a lot of scared people searched frantically for "Opus Advokatfirma" and "Niels Dahl-Nielsen" trying to figure out what to do.
I never liked this business model. In practice, it was intimidation letters dressed up as legal claims â and the people who paid were the ones who got scared and didn't know better.
So I got hold of the domain ("Anti-Piracy-Group dot dk") â someone had forgotten to renew it, and a good friend of mine (who can decide for himself if he wants to be named here đ) bought it and gave it to me. On it, I published a 2,000-word guide on how to respond to Opus's letters â and why you shouldn't just pay.
The Google Analytics account is long deleted, but I remember the site had well over 100,000 visitors over the years. A huge number of people copied the response template, sent it in, and never paid the fine.
I still feel good about that.
Funnily enough, I still rank #
1# on Google for "Opus Advokatfirma" â nobody's just searching for it anymore. đ
I just renewed the domain for another 5 years and put Punktum DK's "VID" (Very Important Domain) protection on it.
