For @compactmag I gave a rundown of the Arday/Cofnas affair and theorized it as a struggle between old and new visions of academic priorities, standards, and research topics.
“Nowhere does the charge of ‘whistleblowing’ appear”
Do these folks actually think that when an institution retaliates against a whistleblower they charge the person with ‘whistleblowing’?!? Do they not know that inventing some pretext is *exactly* what retaliation involves?
I was reading Steinbeck's East of Eden and found a 2008 Walgreens receipt on which someone copied out the passage:
"A man, after he has brushed off the dust and chips of his life, will have left only the hard, clean questions: Was it good or was it evil? Have I done well—or ill?"
check out the latest ep of my philosophy podcast, in which Peter van Inwagen and i discuss and debate free will. it's my favorite episode so far.. and probs the best conversation i’ve had all year!
Arday was possible because academics don't take their own profession seriously enough. They want the prestige of being intellectuals without the responsibility.
Funnily enough, the childish performance of inability to read simple and clear writing that the critics of analytic philosophy are doing on here right now is reminiscent more than anything of a familiar style of argument in - you guessed it - analytic philosophy
so: “many” who, how many, most? “evo psychs and philosophers believe” in the same way? “shaped” meaninglessly indeterminate. “in their view” is this cashing out ‘shaped’, their one view? are the examples from the lit (citable) or supposedly ordinary illustrative moral beliefs?
One of my favorite stories of the Woke Era is the sordid tale of Yi-Fen Chou, an obscure poet whose poem “The Bees, the Flowers, Jesus, Ancient Tigers, Poseidon, Adam and Eve,” was selected for the prestigious Best American Poetry collection in 2015.
What the editors of Best American didn’t know was that the same poem had been rejected over 40 times by journals large and small and that Yi-Fen Chou was not a Chinese woman with a complicated immigration story, but a non-descript white guy from Fort Wayne Indiana named Michael Derek Hudson who after years of summary rejection by the literary establishment decided to submit his poems under a different name and was immediately vaulted to the heights of success in his field.
I have started to feel that this case is "for all the marbles" when it comes to academia. Either we embrace some very basic standards and stop retaliating against whistleblowers or the whole enterprise is pointless. The spectacle of apologizing for exposing fraud is ludicrous.
To settle a troublesome discourse, I have provided here the most faithful and poetic possible translation of the beginning of the Odyssey.
