This is infuriating. This admin has spent years arguing that exploiting foreign workers hurts American wages & working conditions. Now it is making it harder for foreign workers to leave bad employers thus INCREASING exploitation. A thread of the admin’s own words + sources:

I’ve been reflecting on the observation that technology changes are faster than ever, but human needs and wants remain the same The most powerful experiences I’ve had this year were tech-free. Watching the US beat Bosnia live with 60,000 other Americans. Hosting the South Bay Renaissance kickoff with 200 folks just 7 days after the tweet. Playing soccer with my kids and winning an adult rec league in Portola Valley. Humans need community. We are fundamentally social animals. We want to spend time with others who share our interests, our backgrounds, our neighborhoods. When designing tech products, my focus is not to make more addictive experiences that draw us away from physical reality. It’s to add more vibrancy to our real lives. That North Star is what inspires me to build Tribe and hope will also guide the thousands of founders building products today.

Doomers gets all the media attention, but we live in an incredible time of mind-blowing tech advancements - New cancer treatments and breakthroughs seemingly every month - Magic medicines that makes you lose weight and reduce chance of heart disease - AI helping you analyze or research anything with just a few words - Battery and charging technology which makes any mobility device or vehicle massively better - Solar panels getting cheaper and more efficient producing close to free energy - Robotics and self-driving cars becoming plentiful and cheap - What else did I miss? We're extraordinarily lucky to be living at this time. Take a moment to appreciate it!

Personalized software for individuals is so easy to create now with AI, and we can see plenty of fun examples here on X But will folks really use their own creations? It seems unlikely. Making a personal game, for example, is fun for like 2 mins and then gets boring. Most of the fun of gaming is unpredictably experiencing someone else’s carefully thought-out creation and mastering it. I don’t think most personal apps will be useful at all except for the joy of creating them. But ironically the easier they are to create, the more fleeting the joy. A lot of the fun of creating software is also sharing it with friends and seeing their reactions. But folks don’t want to spend much time with someone else’s half assed vibe coded product. So it ends up that most people find joy mainly in bragging about their creations…. which no one uses, including themselves. Humans are hard to please! Even with our own self-made creations

Founder FOMO is off the charts these days. Companies started 2 years ago appear to be getting further ahead than companies started 10-20 years ago. Seemingly effortlessly. So why grind for decades? This is where managing your own psychology is so important as a founder. There are a lot of paths to success and a lot of definitions of success. The easiest definition of success is terminal value of your company. Investors and the media care most about this and that thought has been incepted into the brains of many founders too. But the longer I’m a founder the more I care about everything else. The impact to society. The future success of the team, and bonds built between them. The happiness of customers. Over the decades these are what have created most meaning for me in life and work. And paradoxically the more I’ve focused on these other vectors, the more great opportunities have presented themselves to me. Run your own race.

When your kids are little (<10), it’s quite normal for people to pick different career paths, and I would encourage founders to do the same Avoid business travel as much as possible. This can be the biggest time suck. Yes business travel is better for closing deals, but you can hire great travelers for your team at different life stages. Avoid many nights and weekends at the office. Sounds crazy coming from me who slept in my office for several years, but this phase of life is not the right one for that. Instead learn to work just as hard from home. If these are not possible, I would consider taking a scaled-back role at your company or solving for this in other ways. If you’ve decided to create new humans, you’ll need to make sacrifices in other areas temporarily to ensure those new humans are set up correctly for their lives ahead. This phase of life is incredibly sensitive because small changes in time spent at home can have a big downstream impact in life happiness for your entire family, for a long time into the future.

It's time for a South Bay renaissance Might be hard to recall, but used to be not that long ago that the center of Silicon Valley was squarely in Palo Alto, not SF. When I came to the Bay in 2010, that's where I lived and that's where I stayed and settled down to build my startups It's a beautiful place to live, maybe the best weather in the world, teeming with top talent, safe and family friendly.... but the locus of tech has moved to SF., leaving the startup scene down here somewhat bare and deprived. Most of us are too busy to make it to SF more than 1-2x a month. I'm committed to revitalizing the South Bay for startups - with events, dinners, social activities (incl parent/kids activities), etc. We can build a vibrant hub down here if a few of us make it happen. Announcing the Open Weights AI Summit, featuring a keynote by the one and only Aaron @levie, Founder and CEO of Box @satyanadella's letter in July sparked huge debate in the AI community on what the future looks like for adoption of AI models. There are so many possibilities and the exciting part is we get to shape that future... but only if we coordinate together well as an ecosystem. So we wanted to gather live in-person to discuss what this all meant, and how we can collaborate to further this movement. Participants will include founders, AI engineers, startup builders, and technology leaders who are interested in contributing to this ecosystem and partnering with others. Attendance is limited and preference will be given to people who have something to add to the conversation.
