cG has supported a number of highly impactful AI safety organizations, including Apollo Research, a world-class team studying AI scheming, and Redwood Research, which was involved in the Hugging Face investigation. As someone focused on strengthening the AI safety ecosystem, I find a lot of this work extremely compelling. The ecosystem needs to grow, and we need reality-warping founders to take on these challenges. cG is launching a program to help those founders build ambitious AI safety initiatives. If that sounds like you, consider applying!

Today we’re launching Project Tailwind, a call for founders to start ambitious new AI safety initiatives: We’re looking for great people to engage seriously with the risks of transformative AI, and to create the research, technologies, and institutions that will help humanity navigate them. There are critical, basic problems that no one owns. Over the last several months, my team at @coeff_giving brainstormed ideas we’d be excited to fund if we could find a promising founder, and the list quickly grew to more than 200 entries. We’ve narrowed it down to our favorites, but we also expect the best founders to bring their own ideas: We’re providing funding at three levels: 1️⃣ Pre-seed: $200k to $2m to develop an idea and build a team 2️⃣ Seed: $2m to $20m to launch and scale 3️⃣ Scale: $20m to $200m+ for proven teams to scale, or world-class teams to start If you’re excited about something on our list, or you have another proposal for driving the field forward, you should get involved: There are more good projects than there are people to work on them. Please help us make that stop being true! Also hi, I’m Emily! This is my first tweet. I lead AI and biosecurity grantmaking at @coeff_giving.

Convergent is one of the few places that can incubate organizations behind transformational science: - @E11BIO -- brain connectomics - @ForestNeurotech -- full brain API that became Merge Labs ($250M investment) - @leanprover -- formal mathematics Now it’s applying that model to AI resilience. Deeply needed.

OpenAI Foundation is an improbable organization – not just because of the resources behind it, but because of the uniquely consequential moment humanity now finds itself in. Humanity is entering a technological transformation on the scale of civilization. AI is likely to reshape nearly every part of society. It feels uncomfortably grandiose to write the above, but building the OpenAI Foundation requires taking that seriously. Our core operating model is to empower an ecosystem of organizations to create broad public benefit. We’ve already deployed hundreds of millions of dollars in our first five months, and our planned spending is in the billions. Through our Life Sciences & Curing Diseases and AI for Civil Society and Philanthropy work, we fund organizations that apply AI to important problems in the world, from the Institute for Protein Design, developing new medicines, to the Health Coalition, working to transform delivery of public health in the US with AI. We also fund efforts to reduce the risks that could prevent society from realizing AI’s benefits (we call it AI resilience). That landscape is broad: biological and cyber threats enabled by misuse, misaligned AI systems, the effects of AI on youth, and its impact on the economy. e.g. in case of bio risks, that would be supporting orgs like Blueprint Biosecurity working on pathogen-agnostic defense against airborne threats. The Foundation will also be built differently, with AI deeply integrated into how we operate, make decisions, and get work done. We are still at an embryonic stage. Our team has fewer than 20 people. Much of what the Foundation will become is dependent on the early decisions that we are making today. That is what makes joining now unusual. Our earliest hires will shape not only what we do, but how we work, what we value, what we are willing to attempt, and ultimately what kind of institution the Foundation becomes. If you are AGI-pilled, extremely agentic, and willing to do whatever it takes to build something that matters, come build it with us.

The OpenAI Foundation is hiring people to help turn AI’s capabilities into benefits people can feel. Doing that takes more than advances in AI itself. It takes new scientific infrastructure, stronger institutions, and organizations that can turn new capabilities into real-world impact. We’re hiring talented and passionate people to help us advance our mission:

I’m incredibly excited that Dan Wattendorf is joining OpenAI Foundation as our Head of Bio-Resilience. As AI capabilities advance, biology could become one of the most consequential areas - for both extraordinary benefits and serious risks. We need to build the institutions and technologies that will help the world prepare. Dan has a rare combination of scientific judgment and the ability to make ambitious things happen. He helped pioneer DARPA’s early mRNA technology, served as a US Air Force colonel, and led the Gates Foundation’s Global Health Accelerator. There is an enormous amount to build, and I’m very glad Dan will be leading the charge.

I’m proud OpenAI Foundation is backing Intercept because it focuses on many pathogen-agnostic countermeasures: defenses that can work across many respiratory threats, not just the one we saw last. Broad-spectrum preventatives, clean air, and far-UVC are core to bio-resilience.

The OpenAI Foundation is joining Intercept as a founding partner through our AI resilience program. As AI accelerates advances in biology and medicine, we also need to prepare for the risks of misuse, including the potential for engineered outbreaks. Intercept Health Fund is working to end respiratory pandemics through a pathogen-agnostic approach, investing in broad-spectrum preventatives and non-pharmaceutical interventions that can protect against a wide range of threats and strengthen a new layer of resilience for humanity.

Building AI resilience is among the most important work of our generation. We have a lot to do to get it right. At the OpenAI Foundation, this is where we’re starting:
AI is advancing quickly. Society’s ability to manage its risks must advance just as fast. Today we’re sharing our vision for AI Resilience, with more than $130M in initial grants underway across bio-resilience, cyber-resilience, AI model safety, and AI’s impact on young people:

OpenAI Foundation is taking an end-to-end approach to tackling Alzheimer's with AI. We're supporting the full spectrum of work — from early diagnosis and better understanding of the disease, to accelerating new drug discovery. This month, we're finalizing over $100M in grants across six institutions to advance this comprehensive effort.

Life update — I’m moving to the OpenAI Foundation to lead AI resilience. AGI will bring tremendous benefits and potential disruptions, such as impacts on children and youth, model malfunctions, emergent bio-risks, and more. AI resilience is about minimizing these disruptions so society can fully realize the benefits.

AI won’t just change childhood. It may shape how children develop — how they learn, regulate emotions, tolerate frustration, and form relationships. My wife wrote an essay about it:

I try to not talk about politics. I generally believe the best way I can serve the world is as a non-partisan expert, and my genuine beliefs are quite moderate. So the bar is very high for me to comment. But recent events – a federal agent killing an ICU nurse for seemingly no reason and with no provocation – shock the conscience. My deep loyalty is to the principles of classical liberal democracy: freedom of speech, the rule of law, the dignity of the human person. I immigrated to the United States – and eventually cofounded Anthropic here – believing it was a pillar of these principles. I feel very sad today.

Looking for ambitious, concrete projects to prepare the world for advanced AI. 🧠 🚀
REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS What do we need to build to prepare the world for advanced AI? >$25 billion is about to flow into AI resilience and AI-for-science from the OpenAI Foundation, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, and other major funders. But there's no shovel-ready list of the essential projects to build, and no critical mass of builders ready to execute. We're trying to fix that with The Launch Sequence, a collection of concrete projects to accelerate science, strengthen security, and adapt institutions to future advanced AI. We're opening up The Launch Sequence for new pitches. We'll help you develop your idea, connect you with funders, and get it built. $10,000 honorarium for published proposals. 🔗 Read the RFP and submit a short pitch (200–400 words): We’re looking for short pitches in three areas: 1. Accelerating science: What do researchers need to make breakthroughs with AI that markets and conventional grants won’t fund fast enough? 2. Strengthening security: What tools, technologies, or orgs can help ensure rapid AI advances don't undermine national security and public safety? 3. Adapting institutions: How do our institutions need to evolve to help society adapt to AI-driven change while preserving human agency? Our advisory panel: – @woj_zaremba, OpenAI co-founder – @tkalil2050, CEO of Renaissance Philanthropy – @matthewclifford, Co-founder & Chair of Entrepreneurs First, founding Chair of ARIA On top of the $10,000 honorarium, we offer a $1,000 bounty for pitching an idea we hadn’t heard before (if we publish it), and for every successful referral. Submissions are rolling, but we'll prioritize early pitches (within the next few weeks) and start reviewing immediately.
