🦷 THE MYSTERY OF TOOTH DECAY: CAN YOUR DIET REALLY HELP REPAIR YOUR TEETH? For decades, we have been taught a simple story about tooth decay: a tooth develops a cavity, the dentist drills it, fills it, and the problem is solved. But there is a fascinating part of dental science that is often overlooked. Your teeth are not completely lifeless structures. They are constantly losing and gaining minerals—and what you eat can influence that battle. Nearly 100 years ago, British researcher May Mellanby was already investigating how nutrition affected the development and strength of teeth. Her research, including studies involving children, helped reveal that nutrition could influence how resistant teeth were to decay. At the time, this was a remarkable idea. Today, modern dentistry understands something even more clearly: tooth enamel is involved in a continuous process of mineral loss and repair. Every time you eat sugar or other fermentable carbohydrates, bacteria in your mouth can use them as fuel and produce acids. Those acids can pull minerals such as calcium and phosphate out of the enamel. But the process does not necessarily end there. Saliva, fluoride and minerals in the mouth can help replace some of what was lost and strengthen weakened areas. And this is where the story gets interesting. The earliest stages of tooth decay may not always mean that a permanent hole has formed. Before the enamel collapses, an early lesion can sometimes be stopped from progressing and may even regain minerals through a process called remineralization. That is why dental care is not simply about drilling every suspicious spot. Modern dentistry can use fluoride, dietary changes, better plaque control, sealants and other preventive treatments to help control early decay when appropriate. But there is a crucial catch. Diet cannot magically rebuild a tooth after a large cavity has physically destroyed the enamel. Once a significant hole has formed, the lost tooth structure does not simply grow back because someone changes their diet. Depending on the damage, a dentist may need to restore the tooth. So what did May Mellanby discover almost a century ago? Not that cavities can simply be “healed” by eating the right foods. Rather, her work helped point toward a much more interesting reality: tooth decay is a biological process, and its direction can be influenced by nutrition and the environment inside your mouth. Your teeth are constantly caught in a microscopic battle between mineral loss and mineral repair. Sources: British Medical Journal; Nature; American Dental Association.

REMINDER: In 2019, Julie Wise, the head of King County elections, admitted that non-citizens were being registered to vote at the DOL thanks to motor voter laws. So when Sec. of State Steve Hobbs claims that the US Attorney's list of 405 non-citizens who voted over 1,500 times isn't accurate, he is technically correct. IT'S PROBABLY THOUSANDS MORE, just like US Attorney Neil Floyd announced earlier this week
