i joined a bit late, but was able to jump in the middle of an ongoing discussion about governance vs government and share my opinion on funding OSS/FLOSS
i also recommended the read of @nayafia's book "Working in Public: The Making and Maintenance of Open Source Software,"
which doesn't necessarily address the self-funding or donations/for-profit debate, but do present a strong case in the challenges OSS projects face regarding maintenance -- which proper funding could help address, imo
