It’s affordability, stupid.
89% of voters for the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt say they are worried that prices rise so much that they can’t pay their bills.
In fact, food prices are up 34.7% since 2021. Wages are lacking far behind & only rose 14.8%.
We need Anti-fascist Economics.

It’s true that fascists used price controls but so did Allies during WWII. Price controls were key in Roosevelt’s arsenal of democracy.
Price controls are an economic policy tool. Like taxation or fiscal policy they can be designed in good or bad ways. 🧵

A government that works for people not corporations won against big money once more. Congratulations
@AngieNixon!!
Nixon had $975,000 going into the primary, her opponent Vindman $16.3m.
The winning formula: Affordability, good jobs & making billionaires pay. It’s unstoppable.

If people don’t agree with the prescriptions of mainstream economics, too many economists declare them incompetent. That’s exactly the anti-democratic attitude I’m examining in Anti-fascist Economics!

Review of Social Economy (was) an important home for heterodox and philosophical economics. The resignation of the exceptional co-editor team of Amitava Krishna Dutt, Lisa Herzog, Natascha van der Zwan, and Roberto Veneziani has been driven by actions of Taylor & Francis which will harm the journal, even if by some miracle an equally impressive set of successors are put in place. This diminishes the economics discipline as a whole.

Burnham has the decisive shot at anti-fascist economics. The far right is on the doorstep. Reform ahead in the polls. This is the moment to show: there is an alternative (TIA), there always was.

Refinery margins shooting up like rockets, with the latest uptick in crude prices. This is why we need refinery margin caps as in Austria, instead of subsidies for gas.
Good Morning from #
Germany#, where petrol prices are back >€2 per litre even though Brent crude trades at just €77/bbl. One key reason: European gasoline refining margins have surged to an all-time high this week, widening the gap between crude oil and the pump.

Why Britain’s privatisation experiment is so extraordinary by international standards.
The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, the Public and Commercial Services Union, and Unison Scotland all back a managed phase-out of North Sea oil and gas.
You’re just cherrypicking to create a narrative, but the reality is more nuanced.

This is the real reason to nationalise water - not to undo the mistake of privatisation, but because as the climate and nature crises worsen, the privatised system is less and less able to cope. (We’ll find the same pattern repeating in other essential supplies.)

Trump posts on a platform he owns.
Trump’s posts move markets.
Trump sells early access to his posts to Wall Street.
This is not corruption. This is turning the economy into a casino to enrich the president.
(And please don’t tell me that the market prices resulting from all this are “rational” in any economic sense other than for the purposes of the casino.)

Scoop: Mainstream - the Burnham-backing soft-left group of MPs - has called on the new Labour leader to appoint a "progressive chancellor", in a statement showing tacit support for Ed Miliband.
One insider told the NS: “If Andy is serious about ending 40 years of neoliberalism, then he needs a chancellor who knows how to challenge Treasury orthodoxy, work with the civil service and get progressive things done. That is so obviously Ed".

Here is incoming UK prime minister Andy Burnham. Fingers crossed he lives up to his pledges and mobilizes economics in the service of the common people to keep the far right out.

One of the biggest myths in economics is that “free trade agreements” are about “free trade”. In reality, mega corporate lobbies have made sure to use trade negotiations to gradually expand *their* freedoms — “right to profit” (etc.)— at the expense of everyone else’s.
