id didn’t “ship DLC.” It extracted it. A former producer says Revelations was built in a three-to-four-month sprint under the worst crunch he’d seen—12-hour days for two months, 17-hour days, 80-hour weeks. Hollywood lifer on the team said the same. He missed his son for stretches of it. Then he got laid off on launch day. That’s the real product cycle. Players get a polished expansion. Execs get a clean calendar. The people who paid with sleep and family time get a severance email. Most of the discourse will stall on “was it mandated?” That’s the dodge. Nobody needs a memo when the workload is 60 hours and “player-quality” is the whip. If the game only exists because someone didn’t see their kid, the crunch was the plan. The signal isn’t that id works hard. It’s that a legendary studio can still be hollowed out after the work is done —and the audience will mostly remember the trailer.

CDPR just made Witcher 4 development halt if any console version fails its checkmarks. That is not “quality first.” That is Cyberpunk PTSD written into the schedule. The game already runs on PC, PS5, and Series X. The old method — push PC, patch consoles later — is dead. Miss a platform gate and the whole studio stops. What most people will miss: this protects a 2028 launch and also caps ambition. Every frozen console milestone freezes the PC build too. They are trading spectacle for “it actually works in the living room.” Safer Witcher. Not necessarily a bigger one.
