Market Report 9-17-2026: The Post FOMC Partum Killing Field What happened yesterday was both completely predictable and very disconcerting. My worries that the new FOMC Chair would face that mutiny which could have happened in July, manifested in September amidst other central bank's making policy errors, a full on push to regulate AI while refusing to allow CLARITY to make it through the Senate. The small losses together all add up to a pretty rough week. The unanimous vote is a big tell and the markets are telling you this today. The rule is to fade the initial FOMC reaction and that is pretty obvious today. Davos/London are making their big play to shore up whatever collateral they can still claim and queer any moves Trump tries to make on Canada and the Crown. For now, keep watching the EUR/JPY and the US yield curve. Ignore the day-to-day noise. Everyone is just playing games for clicks while missing the big picture. The BoJ makes its move tonight. It should also be 25 bps. But if it's 50 bps, all of those 'wins' turn to ash in the blink of an eye. This isn't my base case or even my 'outside chance' but it still has to be contemplated within the potential decision space. With SOFR, no one else controls the dollar markets other than US interests and the balance of players at the table are still beholden to the dollar... and most would prefer it, rather than going back to the old ways, you'll just never hear them say it out loud until the outcome of the game is no longer in doubt.

France has got the big mads now. Independence in the Sahel? MERDE!
🇳🇪Niger has signed a $1.9 billion deal to build a new oil refinery and petrochemical plant in Dosso, South Western Niger, 130-140km South east of Niamey. The aim is simple: refine more of its own crude at home, import less fuel, and sell some of it to neighbours in the Sahel. The agreement was signed in Niamey on 15 August with Zimar Group and High Tech. The companies are meant to pay for the plant, build it, run it, then hand it to the state. Construction is supposed to take three years. They then operate it for 13 years. The money still has to be raised within 12 months. The planned plant would process 100,000 barrels a day five times bigger than Niger’s only working refinery at Zinder, which handles 20,000. If it gets built, it would be one of the largest refineries in West Africa, behind Nigeria’s Dangote and Ghana’s Sentuo. Niger now produces about 110,000 barrels a day, but refines only a fifth of that. The rest goes out as crude, mostly through the pipeline to Benin, and the country buys fuel back. A plant this size could flip that. Officials also talk about supplying Mali and Burkina Faso. There is a catch. This is a contract, not a finished refinery. The builders still need financing, and some reports say Zimar has little public record of a project this big. A 100,000-barrel plant would also need a lot of Niger’s current crude, most of which is now exported. If the money comes through, Dosso could become a real energy hub. If it doesn’t, the deal stays on paper. Niger is showing what African can achieve once the shackles of imperialism has been successfully broken.

"Never bet against the Bank of Japan. There's been a lot of people over the years that have bet against the Bank of Japan and have been carried on a stretcher," Tom Luongo @TFL1728 says. Luongo argues the Bank of Japan is "beautifully hedged": its debt-to-GDP ratio is already falling just from letting bonds roll off, while its Nikkei holdings rise as bond values fall. He says the real crisis belongs to investors still leveraged to the yen carry trade. Watch the full discussion on Little by Little with @ASchectman:

To be clear folks, what I’m saying is that it doesn’t matter if the pipelines were hit or not, by the houthis or anyone else… the downstream effects of ‘pipelines were hit’ are exactly the same true or false. So, as always, how do you know what you think you know?

Russia will get the largest gas field in Ukraine. In 2010, the Yuzivska gas field was discovered in Donbas, containing enough fuel to power the entire European continent for 60 years. Obama pressed then-Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych to let US corporations exclusively develop it, but this was denied. The CIA then effected a coup of the Ukrainian government and established a proxy state in 2014. That area will be entirely Russian and all options held by British-Dutch Shell or Canadian Yuzgaz will expire.

The US is considering halting diesel exports. The US is the world's largest diesel exporter... Russia, the 2nd largest, has already halted exports. A US export ban would send global diesel prices even higher and force countries like Japan to dump USTs to fund their domestic needs. In other words, imposing an export ban on diesel would blow up the UST market. There are no easy solutions anymore. We don't own enough hard assets for what's coming.
