NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman says if you don’t want data centers in your backyard, put them in space.
And honestly, the idea is becoming much more serious than it sounds.
The physics isn’t broken. Space offers essentially continuous access to sunlight in certain orbits, while moving compute off Earth could reduce pressure on land, water and local power grids.
But the economics are hard.
You still have to launch the hardware, deal with radiation, dissipate enormous amounts of heat through radiators, maintain communications and eventually replace aging chips in an environment where repairs are anything but easy.
But interesting part is that this is no longer a science-fiction concept.
SpaceX, Google, Starcloud and others are actively developing orbital-compute architectures, while the U.S. government is already studying the technology and its challenges.
