500 years ago today, Juan Elcano died. He was the 1st person to circumnavigate the globe, assuming leadership of Magellan's fleet in 1521 after Magellan was killed. King Carlos I gave him a coat of arms with "Primus circumdedisti me" ("You were the first to circumnavigate me").
