September 19, 1949: The End of Montford Point Seven years earlier, the first Black Marine recruits had started arriving at a segregated training camp outside Camp Lejeune called Montford Point. More than 20,000 Marines would train there before it closed in 1949. Today, we’re going to talk about some of them! Semper Fi!

Its the weekend! Good Saturday to all of you. You might know that Arkansas is known for being chicken country. My husband and I were talking, and I told him I thought I should do a post about how Arkansas became such a huge poultry state. I asked him, “Who started all of that here, Tyson?” He said, “No. Lane Poultry". His family is from Grannis, and his own grandmother was one of the first local farmers to raise chickens for Clift Lane. That stopped me in my tracks because, like most people, I had always heard the Arkansas poultry story told as though Tyson started everything. From rags to riches to bankruptcy to DOJ investigation. Around 1952, Clift and Dorothy Lane began processing chickens at their home in Grannis. They later bought the old railroad depot, added a rendering plant in 1962 and a hatchery in 1968. After acquiring Arkansas Valley Industries, Lane Poultry became one of the largest poultry companies in the state and a major employer across western Arkansas. Lane Poultry was hardly some little chicken operation in Grannis. Before financial trouble forced the company into Chapter 11 reorganization in 1982, Clift and Dorothy Lane had reportedly built one of the largest privately owned poultry companies in America, with 19 plants across six states and approximately 12,000 employees. What followed included years of bankruptcy litigation, congressional scrutiny and Department of Justice investigations, although the available record describes declined prosecutions rather than an actual DOJ prosecution. Tyson acquired Lane Processing in 1986, and that acquisition helped make Tyson the nation’s leading poultry processor. John Tyson certainly deserves his place in Arkansas history, but he didn’t build this state’s poultry industry by himself. Clift and Dorothy Lane and farm families like my husband’s belong in that history too. History usually remembers the name left on the building. It tends to forget the people whose names were taken often were the farmers who helped build the business in the first place.

One of my bucket list items is to bring my boys to Starbase, Texas. I want to tour the place with them, see everything up close and witness a Starship launch in person. I still plan on doing that, but I sure as hell never thought there might come a day when we could watch Starships launch from our own backyard in South Louisiana! I’ve been reading everything I can find about Starbase, Louisiana since the announcement yesterday, and the more I read, the more freaking excited I get about what this could mean for Louisiana. Especially our kids. Elon Musk once said we need things that make us want to get out of bed in the morning and be excited about the future. Well, here you go! We’re talking about a MASSIVE investment right here in South Louisiana. Thousands of jobs! Engineers, welders, electricians, mechanics, operators, construction workers, technicians and probably more that I’m leaving out. There are kids sitting in classrooms around South Louisiana right this second who could be working at Starbase, Louisiana one day. How freaking cool is that?! Louisiana has watched so many kids grow up and leave because the opportunities they wanted just weren’t here. Now some of these kids won’t need to move to Texas or anywhere else to make a damn good living while doing something to bring humanity to Mars and beyond! What does Starbase, Louisiana look like 20 years from now? What businesses grow up around it? What schools start building programs around it? What opportunities come here because SpaceX came here first? Nobody knows yet, but I guarantee that will all happen! How exciting is that? Our grandchildren will think seeing a rocket heading to space from the Louisiana coast is a completely normal daily occurrence! Elon says they eventually plan on launching more than 30 Starships A DAY from Louisiana. Some of our kids and grandkids will eventually be involved in sending them up there, and THAT gives me so much hope for their future! So yeah, I’m still taking my boys to Starbase, Texas. That bucket list item isn’t going anywhere. I also look forward to the day where we are standing in our own backyard together and watching a Starship climb into the Louisiana sky! Hell, maybe I’ll find a way to be a part of this and give them my own personal tour of the place! Thank you for bringing these amazing opportunities to Louisiana, Elon!
