Democrats have become far more extreme than at any point in my life, but Republicans continue to be far more extreme than Democrats.
Good question. Because the Republicans favor unaccountable lawless violent abusive "immigration enforcement", coups, antivaxx mysticism, alliance with Vladimir Putin, military conquest of our neighbors, anti-Indian racism, self-destructive tariffs, and unimaginable corruption.

@Noahpinion How can you ever vote Democrat given this?
@ReichlinMelnick The problem is that that "enforcement" is actually just catching people who cross illegally, turn themselves in to CBP, request asylum, and then try to find ways to stay. Simply admitting more people to this process should not be thought of as "enforcement".

@CameronCorduroy Good question. I'd say maybe yes. The main vector of irregular migration to America is people crossing the border illegally and turning themselves in to CBP and requesting asylum (then trying to find ways to stay). So CBP doesn't prevent this type of quasi-legal immigration.

Good question. At the level of the national party, I'd say 1) categorical opposition to all immigration enforcement, 2) land acknowledgements and other anti-American rhetoric, 3) willingness to countenance explicit racial discrimination in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (and/or the 14th Amendment), and 4) various minor positions on trans issues.
In terms of what people vote on, I'd say immigration and racial discrimination are much more important than land acknowledgements or trans issues. In terms of the actual future of the nation, I'd say that the ideology behind land acknowledgments -- which views America as a fundamentally illegitimate settler-colonialist entity whose dissolution is the only true path to historical and global justice -- is far more dangerous and damaging.
At the local level, there is some extremism connected to the Palestine movement, which is both deeply antisemitic and deeply anti-American.

This is just a story about the Democratic Party becoming extremist. It's not the candidate choices who need to moderate -- it's the party's whole ideology.
Of course the GOP are extremist too, but that's no excuse.

Unlike in America, European popular anger at immigration doesn't appear to be cyclical. If European leaders don't become more restrictive, they could be tossed out in favor of the far right.
It's easy to underestimate how anti-immigration western voters are: 60% of European voters want immigration cut significantly, while only 25% of MEPs do.
Across Europe, the average MP is about 1 standard deviation more pro-immigration than their voters.
