Forest Service regularly trains soldiers in wildland firefighting techniques to ensure readiness in the event @DeptofWar assistance is requested as part of the national response to wildfires or other emergencies.

Wildfire response starts long before a fire begins. In Boise, Idaho, @SecretaryBurgum and I met with the men and women on the front lines to discuss how we strengthen prevention, improve forest health, reduce hazardous fuels, strategically stage aviation assets, and ensure our firefighters have the resources they need. As part of that effort, USDA and DOI are accelerating and improving fire prevention techniques to make our forests safer and less susceptible to uncontrolled wildfires through mechanical thinning, prescribed fire, and active forest management. These proactive steps support the more than 30,000 federal firefighters, 400+ aircraft, and all our state and local partners working to protect communities across the country. Under @POTUS, @USDA, @Interior, and @forestservice are working together to keep communities safe, protect our firefighters, and put fires out quickly. USDA is grateful to welcome additional wildfire personnel from Australia and New Zealand who arrived this week to support suppression work across the West. This second contingent—up to 250 skilled fire management specialists—joins the teams deployed in late July and is already contributing to incidents on the ground. Our longstanding international agreements make this collaboration possible and strengthen both our response capacity and shared expertise.

Forest Service rappel crews have surpassed 1k helicopter insertions this season. That shows how active & demanding this wildfire year has been. Each insertion represents highly skilled firefighters being deployed into challenging terrain where rapid response makes a difference.

Earlier this week at the National Interagency Fire Center in Idaho, I met with ranchers who have suffered devastating fire losses across Idaho and Oregon. They shared important feedback on how we can strengthen rangeland management and better protect working lands across the West. The @forestservice announced that Deputy Chief Sarah Fisher will lead a newly unified command structure for Forest Service fire and aviation management professionals across the National Forest System. Sarah is a leader’s leader. She brings the experience, judgment, and steady leadership this critical mission demands. Under her command, our fire and aviation teams will be better aligned to prevent catastrophic wildfires, respond rapidly when fires ignite, and protect our firefighters, ranchers, rural communities, and working lands. Congratulations, Sarah! You will do an outstanding job.

The West is currently facing an intense and dangerous fire season, and communities, ranchers, and firefighters are feeling the devastating impacts. @SecretaryBurgum and I joined federal, state, and local leaders at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho this week for an operational briefing on the fires burning across the West. At PL-5, with dangerous fire weather showing no signs of letting up, we are: ☑️ Surging firefighters, aircraft, equipment, and other resources where they are needed most ☑️ Mobilizing resources across federal, state, local, and Tribal partners ☑️ Supporting firefighters on the front lines and prioritizing their safety and wellbeing ☑️ Protecting communities and helping them recover and rebuild ☑️ Supporting ranchers, landowners, and rural communities impacted by fire ☑️ Working together across agencies so every firefighter (Forest Service, DOI, state, or local) has the support they need. But we also have to address the long-term problem. Years of misguided policies, unnecessary restrictions, and a failure to actively manage our forests have left too much overgrown timber and hazardous fuel on the ground, creating the conditions for larger, hotter, and more destructive fires. We will continue making significant policy changes to restore active forest management, reduce hazardous fuels, and build healthier, more resilient forests and communities. We will continue to surge every resource possible to protect our communities and support the brave men and women on our front lines. 🚨 FERTILIZER UPDATE 🚨 @USDA updated our Fertilizer Transportation Dashboard to give American farmers greater transparency into fertilizer prices, supply, and transportation costs — including new information on the cost of moving fertilizer across the country. We want farmers to have better information about what is driving their input costs — while we work to bring those costs down. For too long, America has relied on foreign suppliers for critical farm inputs — importing roughly 50% of the 20 million tons of fertilizer we use each year. Under @POTUS, we are restoring American fertilizer production at Trump speed: ✅ Saving farmers an estimated $1.8 BILLION annually by suspending countervailing duties on phosphate ✅ Keeping nearly 150,000 metric tons of critical fertilizer moving using targeted Jones Act waivers ✅ Investing $500 MILLION through the FIELDS Program to expand American fertilizer production and infrastructure ✅ Working with industry to bring major new production facilities online We are lowering costs today while rebuilding America’s domestic fertilizer supply chain for the long term. Critically hot, dry, and windy weather is driving active to extreme fire behavior across the West. With 46,064 fires and 6.3M acres burned nationally, interagency crews—from the Forest Service, DOI, and partners nationwide—remain fully engaged on large fires and initial attack.
