This is quite an extraordinary sign of stress in global financial markets and likely designed to buy time for a more orderly unwind of the yen carry trade. If he had not intervened on Monday, there may have been a repeat of August 24 Black Monday for the Nikkei and substantial collateral damage to US and world financial markets. By no means is this risk of global financial collapse over yet. This was like using a fire extinguisher on a five-alarm fire 🔥
