🚨 28 CHARGED in major #HSTF# firearms trafficking takedown. For two years, @ATFPhoenix worked with #HSTF# partners @HSI_HQ @CBP and @USAO_AZ to investigate a network that used straw buyers to acquire pistols and AK style rifles in Arizona, some of which were later trafficked to Mexico. The investigation led to large seizures of firearms and ammunition, and last month, a federal grand jury indictment of 28 people. Read more at #StopGunTrafficking# #WeAreATF#

ATF is proposing to clarify rules on transporting firearms and ammunition aboard common or contract carriers. A person who travels while personally maintaining direct control over their firearm or ammunition does not constitute “delivery” to the carrier under the Gun Control Act. This eliminates longstanding ambiguity and provides clear guidance for law-abiding travelers. Read the proposal and comment at #NewEra#

ATF is proposing a new streamlined process for converting temporarily imported firearms to permanent import status. Importers will be able to submit an ATF Form 6 application when the temporary authorization expires, instead of being forced to re-export, destroy, or permanently reimport the firearm. This fills a current regulatory gap, reduces significant costs and burdens, while maintaining all import controls. Read the proposal and comment at #NewEra#

ATF is proposing to clarify that “training rounds,” including inert, marking, and simulated-projectile products used for training, do not meet the statutory definition of “ammunition” under the Gun Control Act. These items are therefore not regulated under the GCA or Arms Export Control Act provided the round is not for a firearm. The change provides clear regulatory certainty for manufacturers, importers, and law enforcement suppliers. Read this proposal and comment at #NewEra#

ATF is proposing to define “willfully” in DOJ regulations that implement the Gun Control Act. The definition follows the U.S. Supreme Court’s standard in Bryan v. United States: a person acts willfully when they know their conduct is unlawful, even if they are not aware of the specific statute or rule being violated. This provides clearer guidance for license suspension, revocation, and civil penalty actions. Read the proposal and comment at #NewEra#

ATF is removing the two sentences from its regulatory definitions of "machine gun" that included bump stocks. This directly implements the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2024 decision in Garland v. Cargill, which ruled that semiautomatic rifles with bump stocks are not machine guns under the National Firearms Act. The change aligns ATF’s regulations with the statute and the Court’s binding interpretation. Read the final rule at #NewEra#

The new ATF Forensic Crime Gun Intelligence Laboratory is purpose-built to transform how law enforcement investigates violent firearms crimes. As the first forensic laboratory to specialize in DNA recovery from fired cartridge cases, FCGIL combines advanced DNA collection and analysis with a high-throughput workflow. This enables rapid development of investigative leads from crime scene evidence and felon-in-possession cases, linking suspects through the national DNA database hits and connecting crimes even when different firearms are used. “This laboratory is a force multiplier for law enforcement,” said ATF Director Robert Cekada. “It brings together DNA, casing acquisitions into NIBIN, firearm examinations, serial number restoration, latent fingerprints, and intelligence support in one place, allowing us to move faster and provide investigators with the leads they need. Every hour matters in a violent crime investigation, and this facility helps close that gap and strengthens our ability to go after those who use firearms to harm our communities.” Learn more about ATF labs at #CrimeGunIntel#
