HDRIs, environments, physical lights, emission. Different tools, one fundamental job: getting light into the scene. Day 4 of Octane Foundations
Cinema 4D. Blender. Houdini. Standalone. Different interfaces, same underlying Octane. Day 3 of Octane Foundations looks beyond the DCC to the engine underneath.
Better rendering isn’t always about knowing more settings. Sometimes it’s about knowing how to approach them. Day 2 of our new Octane Foundations series.
New to Octane, or just want a better understanding of what’s actually happening under the hood? Start here. Day 1 of our new Octane Foundations series.
SplatPaint is a real-time browser-based creative sandbox for Gaussian Splats: paint, sculpt, recolor, relight, deform, animate, and layer wicked particle system FX. You don’t even need a splat asset to begin. Grab an image, logo, or 3D model, convert it into splats (inside SplatPaint), and start building something unique. For the next 48 hours, SplatPaint is open to everyone for free. Check it out now!

Create splat art from a single image. No splat assets needed. SplatPaint turns images into volumetric splats in seconds, then lets you deform them, stack real-time FX, and copy/paste looks between assets. Free for 48 hours:

Gaussian splats are making their way into more and more DCCs, which is awesome to see. But there’s a big difference between supporting splats and building an entire creative workflow around them. That’s what SplatPaint is focused on. Editing, painting, relighting, sculpting, animating, transforming, FX, cleanup, optimization and a growing set of tools designed specifically around Gaussian splats as a creative medium. The latest drop is FX #35#: Focus Scatter, a GPU-accelerated real-time effect that scatters points based on the active camera view. Move or rotate the camera and the effect shifts with it, creating a really fun pointillism-style using depth directly from the splats. 35 real-time FX. Hundreds of splat-focused tools and features. And a lot more coming! If you’re working with splats, give it a spin:

Workflows that make you say OH YEAAHH! In celebration of National Kool-Aid Day, let’s look at kicking off a little 3D build from concept to execution. For concepting, we’ll start inside @OTOY Studio, using the ChatGPT 2 Image model to reinterpret the reference as an enamel pin. Then, we’ll pipe that result into another image node to generate clean, isolated 2D artwork with transparency. Next, we dive briefly into Photoshop, where the transparency is converted into a vector path and exported to Cinema 4D. Because the spline comes directly from the artwork, everything lines up perfectly. A few quick modeling tricks later, the pin is built. Materials, lighting and final look development are handled with @OTOY OctaneRender. Now the handoff. Using the Cinema 4D @rendernetwork Wizard, the finished scene is submitted directly to Render Network. The scene uploads, the job is configured in the Manager App, and all 180 frames are rendered in minutes. Concept → artwork → vector → 3D → Octane → Render Network. OH YEAAHH!

OTOMO is out - procedural pipes, cables & ducts for Cinema 4D. As you might know, I take pipes very serious and I am the founder of a movement that's called "OTOMO PIPE PRIDE" (see 6088AD for reference).... now it's a tiny bit less painful.

With newly added Gaussian splat tools like TripoSplat image-to-splat, @OTOY Studio makes it possible to rapidly turn a single image into a real-time volumetric 3D asset and carry it into a broader production workflow. Here I generated a sand castle splat in OTOY Studio, brought it into @SplatPaintApp for real-time procedural FX, imported it into Cinema 4D to build an X-Particles system, and then exported the animated splat sequence into Octane Standalone for final relighting and rendering. Image → splat → real-time FX → X-Particles → animated splat sequence → Octane render. The full animation can seamlessly be sent to @rendernetwork for scalable rendering without changing the core workflow. Rapid iteration, real-time creative control, and a direct path into production VFX. Explore the tools at:

Twenty minutes. That's all it took to create these animated jellyfish. Using @OTOY OTOY Studio's Image-to-Splat tools, I generated a full 3D volumetric Gaussian splat from a single image in seconds. I brought it into SplatPaint, added flowing animated FX, then duplicated the effect across multiple instances in real time. No modeling. No UVs. No cloth simulations. Just rapid creative iteration. Could I build something even more physically accurate with traditional geometry? Absolutely. It would also take hours instead of minutes. Gaussian Splats aren't here to replace traditional 3D workflows - but they open up an entirely new creative playground where ideas can be explored, animated, and iterated at incredible speed.

SplatPaint uses splats directly as FX and particles - no conversions, no guesswork, just fast real-time results. With 32 live FX modes stackable up to six layers deep, you can create more than 500 million unique animated FX combinations - and it’s only getting faster and more powerful. Transform splat assets, build entirely new forms of SPLAT ART, and easily bring the results into your favorite DCCs. SplatPaint Alpha opens this weekend. Interested?
