only three things matter in enterprise sales … 1. is there internal pressure/incentive 2. do you have their cell number 3. have they shared insider intel/gossip
my biggest unlock occurred with my boss who was a former senior McK consultant i learned corporate incentives, pace, outcomes, where line was, etc. in enterprise essentially, a baseline for what I could and could not get away with the most important thing I can share is the market will be far, far more forgiving to a founder if they overstep than a sales rep who doesn’t know what they’re doing Founders; your time in ENT is one of highest leverage activities

A lot of VCs (myself included) used to shit on the ex-banker/consultant founder archetype. But I'm increasingly realizing I was wrong. In an age where building is easier and distribution/execution is still hard, these programs are the perfect training grounds. 2 years at McK/GS/etc. teaches you how to grind, how to sell to enterprises, how to work effectively in a team, and gives you a deep understanding of business models. Exactly what it takes to succeed as a founder in 2026.

startup folks: policy and regulation is NOT a compliance issue BUT, the biggest risk and opportunity to growth, GTM, and product you are seeing in real-time the lever being pulled ... this is why I'm manically focused here; it was maybe less obvious a few years, but front and center now ... governors, state lawmakers, AGs, etc. are all focused here - just beginning @evanburns and @JamieLightShed saw this early

this is proof the startup market is starved for IC-based sales insights … 91K views is bonkers I’m to busy selling, but someone, somewhere should interview ICs across various companies …

a few enterprise sales thoughts ... 1. the entire game is about expansion; beyond just seats. once you're in, you're in ... getting in is the hardest part (i.e. the land) -- all future rev. multiples are in expand. 2. selling a $100K deal is often same effort as closing a $1MM deal 3. deals get closed in text; if you're not texting there's a lot at risk 4. corporates entire job is to build for the boss; the frame needs to land for their boss/board (i.e. C-suite) 5. tier 1 logos ARE the early adopters; everyone has this wrong 6. procurement is designed to slow-down momentum in buying process; meaning it's the justification stage; do not let this go more than 30-45 days 7. founders involved in the sales process is the biggest competitive advantage of it all; visionary/passion hits so, so different 8. services are their largest budget line item; find a way to leverage this; it's also the fastest way in 9. make all your claims auditable; for example: "we save you 1,000+ hrs" feels very sales-y and far reaching 10. the sales team with most insider intel will always wins 11. selling the problem is a waste of time; critical to understand, YES, but seldom why they buy -- fastest way to commoditize yourself

enterprise sales rule if the executive sponsor, does NOT need to see the solution you're price/business value is too low OR perceived to be too low
enterprise sales is nothing like sales … it’s 1:1 consulting to land and expand $MM deals
I don’t listen to many podcasts but if you’re in startup enterprise sales these are must listen

enterprise startups ... this is often counterintuitive the market seldom wants discounts you're negotiating with yourself OR someone junior if they feel the value/price is mismatched, they want more value to close that gap i.e. 'harderworking' solution ...

New podcast, more autobiographical than most:
finally someone appreciates me for my humor ❤️
jen abel might be @lennysan's best recurring guest. i've listened to all three of her episodes. first was founder-led sales (0 to $1m). second was 1-10. the latest one's about the playbook on how to sell into enterprises ($100k+ acv deals). one of the more useful ~90 mins i've spent on a podcast this year. jen's whole framework reiterates how people try to reduce sales down to a science when it's clearly not one. it deals with actual humans, actual psychology, actual variance. it's closer to an art than a process. another compelling point she made: when someone brings your tool into their org, they're spending real political capital to do it. that changes how you should think about the relationship; it's someone vouching for you internally. sales might be one of the few things that survives the ai era mostly untouched. it's also why fde roles are exploding right now. the same instinct with a different (fancy) label - still fundamentally about a human building trust with another human. also @jjen_abel's twitter is genuinely funny, worth following independent of the sales content. rare combo of being both one of the sharpest people on enterprise gtm and one of the funniest follows.

the vision @evanburns has is absolutely insane watch this, trust me ... and, watch it one more time ...
More Americans believe we’ll colonize the moon before we fix K-12 education. This is a policy problem. We have been building a solution that’s already trusted by many of the Fortune 500 as well as 1/3 of federal and state elected officials in the United States. Organizations are more impacted by policy than by financial markets. Yet financial markets have been real-time for decades, and policy markets are still nearly impossible to follow. @StateAffairsUS has raised over $70M from @rabois, @khoslaventures, @foundersfund and others to fix that. We are creating the world’s first real-time knowledge graph for policy and regulatory markets. This platform is foundationally built on non-partisan journalism and the collection of on-the-ground data that isn’t digitally accessible. In the future, we believe every executive will watch policy markets the way they watch financial markets. Instead of reacting to regulation, they’ll navigate it proactively. Policy should iterate at the speed of our most innovative industries.

Happy Sunday. Of course I’m using toddler nap time to listen to this as I clean the kitchen. Cleaning didn’t get too far as I stop this video every 10 minutes to deeply reflect on what we do at Mentorly and how we could get more alpha. I may say this is my fav @lennysan pod of all time(!) that’s a big statement. Thx @jjen_abel - I love sales even more now.

founder involvement in enterprise sales is the friggin' magic ... nuance: make sure it's paired in loop with their exec sponsor
