Given how wary academia (understandably) is of the effects of AI on many disciplines, it is particularly ironic that consuming its publications is so easy for the models (the world's knowledge is neatly serried in their pretraining corpora) and so cumbersome for most humans (with trenches of CAPTCHAs, accounts, and paywalls ensuring that only the unusually dedicated reader will ever make contact).

Met a German founder this week and asked him if all the stories one reads about the challenges of startups in Germany are exaggerated. "No, they're understated." Proceeded to describe spending a full day having a 90-page investment contract read to him (mandatory under German law; § 13 BeurkG) by a notary that then charged €30,000. That was for his first company. His second company, needless to say, was not incorporated in Germany.

AI also clearly lets more people there participate in shipping great product, lets designers go way broader in their explorations, and even lets designers/engineers do work that simply wasn’t possible before AI (wait 'till you see how their brand team uses AI)

Works in Progress may be the most interesting magazine publishing today. This article on the evolution of horses nicely illustrates the power of selection (natural and artificial) of heritable traits to shape a species, but also the massive role of developmental chance: Secretariat, history's fastest horse, had a massive heart, in his case a non-genetic trait which was not passed on to his descendants.

I suspect that discussions of canon, culture, and shared context to return to the fore in the coming years, as many skills, narrowly-construed, are ceded to AI, and as some of the excesses of de-Arnoldization, and the processes that Arendt described in her writing on education, start to recede.
I’m curious on the causal linkage between PISA scores and the reforms he describes.
It feels like a very exciting time to be a theorist of education, and I assume that the best work will come from surprising places.

Architects oppose the kinds of buildings that most people like.
(I’ve wondered if one could further corroborate this by using Flickr/Instagram or similar to investigate the building traits that correlate with photo frequency.)

Does the public prefer traditional architecture? Half a century of surveys find:
- Between 60 and 95 percent prefer traditional architecture;
- This pattern holds across gender, class, race, nationality and political views;
- More traditional densification schemes seem to attract remarkably high levels of survey support;
- Laypeople and design professionals respond dramatically differently, with professionals far more favourable to modern styles.
Research is still at an early stage, and many questions remain. Personally, I am particularly interested in how the public would respond to a non-traditional but richer and more decorative style? I think they might like it, but we don’t have hard evidence yet.
But the results are already puzzling. Why do people end up buying buildings that are so different to the buildings they say they prefer? How did we end up in this odd situation? What can we do about it?
