They're not "migrants". Migrants go to an embassy, apply for a visa, wait their turn and then come when they're allowed. These people are *illegally* entering a European country. Given that Europe has no borders within it, they are effectively entering all of Europe illegally. And from there, since Britain won't enforce our borders either they can come here. I really hate the language that people sometimes use when discussing these issues but 50 THOUSAND people coming into a country illegally in a day can only be described truthfully with one word: invasion. These people are invading our countries against our will. If you're someone who is really concerned about the "rise of the far right", you should be calling and actively working for this to be dealt with with extreme urgency. Because if liberals don't police the borders, fascists will.

My husband and I drive across Europe between Ireland and Finland four times per year. After witnessing the invasion of Ceuta and Melilla I would gladly sit at each border crossing (nine in total) and wait in a queue to show my passport if it meant Europe's borders were secure.

It’s worth remembering that the EU’s Migrant Pact came into force on June 12 2026 It means that when there’s a sudden big influx of illegal migrants arriving in a country (Spain), that country can use the EU’s Solidarity Mechanism. It obliges other EU states taking in quota migrants from that country (to relieve pressure) or having to pay tens of thousands euros for every quota migrant assigned to them that they refused take in. Under the EU’s Migrant Pact (which wasn’t passed in a unanimous vote but through qualified majority voting) other EU member states might be forced to take some of the thousands of illegal migrants storming Ceuta and Melilla today, or they might be forced to pay for them.

This is exactly why more and more gays want nothing to do with the alphabet soup that now speaks over us. An Islamist drives a van into a Pride parade, killing someone and injuring dozens, and at the vigil an activist is more distressed that the attacker was not a white Christian than by the fact gays were deliberately targeted. The narrative must be protected at all costs. German authorities are treating the attack as Islamist terrorism. It is the same cognitive dissonance every single time. Gays are attacked by Islamists, but queer activists panic about “Islamophobia.” Gay kids who do not conform to stereotypes are encouraged to question whether they were born in the wrong body, but the same activists insist they are fighting conversion therapy. Women object to males entering their sports, prisons and changing rooms, and somehow the invader becomes the victim. Gays who no longer recognise a movement supposedly representing us, are told to shut up by these same people who’d rather protect those who want to kill us than the victims of extremism. They do not care about gays as people. They care about us as characters in a political story. The second reality interferes with that story, they play the victim. You cannot build a movement around denying what we can all see right in front of us.

The concept of “refugee” has changed a lot in 100 years. Once, they were starving women, children, & elderly temporarily & reluctantly fleeing their homes with only the rags on their backs. Now, they are fashionable young men with iPhones cheerily resettling abroad for good.

I would actually go further: I would contend that the adoption of the Palestinian cause as being core to Irish identity has been the most culturally, diplomatically, and reputationally catastrophic move for our country in the last decade. Culturally speaking the dominance of Palestine in the arts has eroded the focus on our own stories and talent, in addition to cultivating an atmosphere of exclusion and bigotry. My own grandmother spent her entire professional career in the Irish theatre and film industry. I often think about what she would feel if she were alive to see the (both state funded) Abbey Theatre and National Concert Hall refuse to host a play about October 7th. What a tragic state of affairs for Irish theatre this egregious censorship is. Diplomatically, we have embarrassed ourselves on a world stage with our self-righteous posturing as all-knowing moral arbiters on this issue. At this point every sane politician knows it, which is why most members of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have been uncharacteristically silent on Israel/Palestine as of late. I have friends in Brussels who tell me that Irish MEPs are a known laughing stock with their deranged tirades. Reputationally, I think we are aware by now what it has caused us. Irish people can throw a conspiratorial hissy fit and claim it is a ‘smear campaign’ all they like. The reputation has been solidified. How could it not when a major Irish music band scream ‘up Hamas, up Hezbollah’ on stage and our media class continues to platform and laud them? How could it not when an Irish television presenter on our state broadcaster brings up Palestine when talking about an attack on British Jews? How could it not when a former Taoiseach (Prime Minister) refers to a young Irish child saved from Hamas captivity as being ‘lost and found’? It goes on and on and on. Irish people have every right to feel deeply about the Palestinian cause and advocate strongly in support of it. What should never have been done, however, is the imposed adoption of the Palestinian cause as being core to Irish identity by our political, media, NGO, and academic class. It has resulted in Irish people downplaying, excusing, and in some cases celebrating great evils being done in this cause’s name; because it was positioned as our own. It is not. It has never been and it will never be.

Worse again, the Department of Justice cannot tell us where the rest of them are. I asked directly how many people under deportation orders have gone missing. The Department produced no number at all. So the official position of the Irish State is that it hopes they went home. The same paper reports more than 16,000 people arrived at Dublin Airport without passports since 2020. The public has been asked to accept a lot on immigration. Jo Nagai was raising swallowtail butterflies at his home in Kobe, Japan, when he noticed something odd. The ones he had looked after as caterpillars seemed to recognize him. Wild butterflies fled. His didn't. He was in second grade. He wrote a four-page letter to Dr. Martha Weiss, an entomologist at Georgetown University who had studied whether moths could retain memories through metamorphosis. He asked if she could help him design a version of her experiment for butterflies. She said yes. Using a muscle therapy device, Jo trained caterpillars to associate the scent of lavender with a mild vibration. When the caterpillars became butterflies, 70 per cent of them still avoided the lavender. Their brains had been completely rebuilt during metamorphosis. The memory survived anyway. Then he bred them. The offspring, which had never been trained, also avoided lavender. So did their grandchildren. Ireland is becoming a soft option, just like Vietnam or Cambodia did for the likes of Gary Glitter. Light sentences for sex offenders, failures to deport criminals, and letting in people with foreign criminal records, it’s a joke. This sends a terrible message. Ken O’Flynn is right, we’re turning into a refuge for those fleeing justice, not persecution.
