This week our CEO @NiccoloDeMasi joined His Majesty The King's AI Summit at Dumfries House in Scotland, contributing to discussions with leaders at the forefront of AI chips, advanced technology, and scientific research. Niccolo shared that the quantum processing unit (QPU) will sit alongside the graphics processing unit (GPU) in shaping what computing does for the economy and society. Quantum technologies will tackle problems that are not economically viable on classical machines and keep people in charge of the questions being asked. Niccolo also set out what this means in practice. Work that classical machines cannot take on will create new jobs and new growth, in materials science, pharmaceuticals and financial services thanks to quantum systems. On the problems they are built for, quantum computers can reach an answer using a fraction of the energy a classical supercomputer would need. In a world where grid capacity is becoming the limit on what can be computed, developing these solutions has never been more important." We are excited to unveil that @EPB_Chattanooga—an electric utility in Chattanooga, TN—has built the world's first commercial quantum computing and quantum networking hub in the U.S. Local businesses and companies across Chattanooga and Tennessee will be developing, testing and deploying quantum technologies along with a growing network of development partners including @UTChattanooga and @VanderbiltU. The hub’s first project—running quantum algorithms to optimize local power grid circuits—will be led by EPB’s Quantum Computing Fellows program and funded by a $4 million grant from the @NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Together with @nvidia and @Synopsys, we have new research showing that quantum algorithms integrated into mainstream engineering software can accelerate complex industrial design by up to 14.6%. Our results illustrate that hybrid quantum computing can address major computational bottlenecks for classical supercomputers, improving runtime for complex dynamic simulations such as processing time for complex car and jet engine simulations. The most accurate approach to training AI is too costly to run, due to trial-and-error parameter-tuning loops. Now, with partners @ORNL, @nvidia, and @UTKnoxville, we show that a trained generative model can write quantum optimization circuits directly—eliminating those costly loops. Hybrid quantum optimization breaks a large problem into smaller pieces, solves each one, and recombines the results for optimal results. Both the trial-and-error and generative methods ran through NVIDIA CUDA-Q, which provided a controlled comparison of the two end-to-end workflows.
