We started looking hard at the @AnthropicAI Series E in late 2024 at @notablecap, and our capital went into the round in early ‘25. At a $61.5 billion post-money valuation, it was, by more than an order of magnitude, the highest price I'd ever paid for a venture investment.
It seems like an obvious call in retrospect, but at the time the gross margins were much lower than they are now, the cost of training models was very high, and, even if Anthropic was able to attract enough capital, it was still in question whether they could catch up to OpenAI.

Is the developer still the kingmaker?
Back in 2020, I wrote that software developers had become the modern-day kingmakers. Every company was becoming a software company, and the people choosing the tools were the people writing the code.
The job has massively changed shape since then. Look at what @browserbase shipped this week with Stagehand v4, built around what an agent needs from a browser rather than what a human writing a test needs.
Developers still choose the tools. But the old eval model has been upended. Most product and company positioning I see hasn't caught up with this shift. @pk_iv puts on a masterclass here.
