With these security/“danger” claims from AI companies, we need a third party lab dedicated to independent reproducibility (and public disclosure). They create chaos with these blogs/press releases, but only they know what really happened.
Obviously this is much easier with open models (which is why open source software is demonstrably safer). But I think it could still work.
You shouldn’t be allowed to declare “danger” and create chaos if other people can’t verify what you are claiming.
The way to think about “open” in software is being a low-cost producer (vs a high margin one). When a company (or 2) achieves record valuations in record time, that rightfully attracts competition (as it should). We need to let the free market work.
This is 💯 right. You might as well put a high-fence around the United States. We wouldn’t be locking other people out — we would be caging ourselves in. & using AI with price/performance that isn’t globally competitive. No need to protect the fastest growing company of all time.
If you are on the verge of AGI or ASI, why isn’t your model smart enough to recognize espionage distillation in real time? You say “cure cancer in a few years.” Isn’t sniffing illicit distillation quite a bit easier than curing cancer? Why write letters to DC? Just use AGI.
This is what’s causing Anthropic to aggressively beg for govt protection (see below). Customers are finding cheaper alternatives. Keeping employees requires continuing ultra-rich secondaries ($$$) that are dependent on revenue growth. When you can’t win on the field go to DC.
A new @bgurley blog post!
I have been thinking about how sophisticated executives are using open source in super creative ways. Started writing this three years ago. Excited to finish it up and publish it! And with the new @p3institute brand.
Paid marketing is the crudest game you can play. It’s admitting you have no creativity. And actually restricts your creativity. Fire those that want to spend more.
