We have officially filed a lawsuit against the New York City Mayor’s Office for unacceptable delays in providing documents related to Mamdani official Ana Maria Archila's attempt to meet with Iran’s UN ambassador. Our public records request sought information on scheduling records for Archila over a six month period. We filed this request on July 9. Four days later, on July 13, the Mayor’s Office notified us that we could expect the response around January 11, 2027. Our lawsuit asks the court to declare the Mayor’s Office’s response unlawful, order it to produce the requested records within five days, and award the attorney’s fees and costs permitted by New York's Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). More broadly, the case asks the court to enforce a modest rule: before City Hall makes a requester wait six months, it must have a request-specific reason for doing so.

The numbers here are insane: In the L.A. Metro system, 97% of people who committed a violent crime evaded the fare. In D.C., 99.5% of those who committed a “Part 1” crime (homicide, rape, robbery, arson, or motor vehicle theft) had dodged the fare. In New York, MTA CEO Janno Lieber says that “virtually all” crimes are committed by fare evaders.

The great @HMDatMI responds to L.A. City Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez calling the homeless "our neighbors": "The vagrants share no characteristics of neighbors. They're parasites on the efforts of the law-abiding, the stable, the hardworking to create a stable community. They contribute nothing to that community. They are colonizing public and private spaces in order to have an uninhibited, unregulated, unconstrained drug party that goes on twenty-four hours a day. They are violent. They are thieves. Yet we are supposed to believe that they are no different from the law-abiding, but for the fact that they are so-called unhoused."

President Trump says Gov. Greg Abbott's data center pause is "a mistake": "They are tremendously important for the economics. I mean, for Texas to say no to data centers is a mistake in the sense that it could be bigger than oil...and there are a lot of communities that want them. But more importantly...there are a lot of countries that want them."

During the Obama administration, schools were put under the threat of investigation if suspension rates were different by race. A student was violent, or brought a weapon to school? It didn't matter. Schools were still under the threat of investigation. "They were really concerned about aggregate statistics and not concerned about the underlying behavior...so a lot of schools stopped reporting when things were happening. There's a common myth that schools are underfunded, but NYC spends $42,000 per pupil. It's true that schools are failing and enrollment is declining, but the culprit isn't a lack of funding—it's mismanagement. @dany_egorov discussed the issue with @DFIPolicy back in May:

Socialists have built out a disciplined political infrastructure that appears poised to continue its gradual capture of the Democratic Party. To beat back the Islamist-sympathizing, Communist-adjacent Left, opponents should begin thinking seriously about how to build, mobilize, and sustain an anti-socialist coalition of Democratic, independent, and Republican normies united around an affirmative, optimistic agenda centered on public safety, economic growth, housing production, functional public services, civic pluralism, upward mobility, and institutional competence.
