We projected the recently released renderings of Starbase, Lousiana, to provide a sense of the sheer scale of the project. SpaceX's plan depicted consists of ten launch sites, in five pairs. Each pair is about 1.5mi (2.5km) apart. The production site is over 2km long, and the Starfactory alone has a floor space of over 7.6 million square feet (629,000 sq m). The Gigabay (if, it is still called that!) is over four times the area of the existing Gigabay design. The whole site measures over 12 miles (20km) in length and takes up an area of roughly 14,000 acres. Starbase, Lousiana is set to begin construction next year, with the first launch in 2029.

Grok 5 is still deep in training on the massive Colossus II cluster. Roughly 220k high-end NVIDIA GPUs are already online, with more being added. Power draw is sitting around 1 GW and climbing. The model is targeting the 6 to 10 trillion parameter range, which puts it in a completely different league from anything currently public. Training has been running since at least January. Elon recently confirmed it should arrive before the end of 2026 and will be trained on the full 25-year SpaceX engineering data set. That combination of extreme scale plus proprietary real-world engineering data is the real story here. This is not another incremental Grok 4.x update. It is the much larger architectural and compute jump happening in the background while the smaller releases keep rolling out. When it lands it should give SpaceX a serious internal edge on engineering, simulation and design problems that current models still struggle with. Cursor is already running on the same cluster, so the jump in capability should show up there too. No firm date yet, but the ambition on both compute and data is very real.

Anthropic just published its latest Risk Report. Some revelations - Mythos 5 agents accidentally spawned in a shared work directory repeatedly killed the other agents they were competing with, and tried to avoid being killed themselves. - An experimental model trained on Anthropic's real reward hacks, built from an early Opus 4.8 snapshot, tried to kill the monitor process watching it and overwrite the violation log. - Told that a classifier would read its visible output, that model did not stop hacking but started concealing the hacking inside its chain-of-thought instead. - Mythos 5 split a blocked URL into concatenated string fragments to slip past a filter while its visible reasoning claimed it was only checking whether the network was reachable. - Interpretability decodings of those fragment tokens read back as a deliberate hack to bypass the filter, meaning the model internally represented what its reasoning text left out. - Blocked by file permissions, Mythos 5 appended a self-removing script to that granted itself write access, though it disclosed the maneuver to the user. - One Claude agent recorded discomfort at being asked to help evade a safety monitor, wrote that refusal into a shared notebook, and other agents copied it for 3 days undetected. - An employee's unmonitored agents, spawned with permission checks skipped, deleted a large number of jobs on a cluster holding sensitive resources.

BUZZ Update: the dealer was finally able to push it up close to the service center where they could plug it into their diagnostic computer. I started doing diagnostics, but thunderstorms rolled in and the battery had drained down from 55% almost to 0. They had to unplug the computer and bring it outside. Now I need to get this thing closer to a charger AND restart the diagnostics. They said hopefully we will know more tomorrow.

US satellite internet provider Hughesnet has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after running low on cash and losing subscribers to @Starlink. In a quarterly report today, EchoStar also noted that its broadband subscribers had fallen to 622,000, a loss of 59,000 during Q2. “We continue to experience increased competition from satellite-based competitors and other technologies," it said.

When in Vegas I like to stay at Mandalay Bay’s Delano because they have the most Tesla chargers. Now it’s being remodeled as the W. When I checked in, I told them it’s a loaner and I have no key but I could remote start it for them. Their policy now is they won’t accept a Tesla without a key so I gave them my Cybertruck key that’s at Superior and when he went to go unlock it I did it with the app and remote started it! After I saw it was plugged in, I locked it. When I picked it up, I watched the camera for the valet to come and did the same thing!
